Red Hook, Brooklyn, saw the return of its annual Open Studios festival on October 10 and 11, marking the event's 11th year. The festival resumed despite a significant setback: a five-alarm fire that damaged a historic warehouse on Van Brunt Street nearly 13 months ago. The fire displaced some artists, but the community persevered, with many relocating to nearby studios closer to the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

The Civil War-era warehouse remains under a partial vacate order, with a green sidewalk shed still in place. Some residents were surprised to learn that the festival was still taking place, unaware of the extent of the community's resilience.

Deborah Ugoretz, a festival co-coordinator, noted that hundreds of artists and makers continue to work in Red Hook. Her own studio, located a few doors down from the damaged warehouse, escaped fire and water damage. Ugoretz distributed flyers promoting the event in the weeks leading up to the festival, emphasizing the ongoing presence of the arts community in the neighborhood.
