France's Supermarket Refrigeration Systems Hit by Mass Hack

France's Supermarket Refrigeration Systems Hit by Mass Hack — arstechnica.com

On Monday, a widespread cyberattack targeted refrigeration systems in approximately 700 supermarkets across France, leading to malfunctions that resulted in significant food spoilage and, in some instances, fires. The compromised systems, which consist of interconnected refrigerators and freezers managed by internet-connected controllers, allowed remote administration by technicians. Attackers exploited these controllers to activate defrosters, raising temperatures to as high as 50° Celsius (122° Fahrenheit).

French authorities confirmed the hack, which affected multiple supermarkets. The controllers, manufactured by Danfoss of Denmark and Dixell and its parent company Copeland in the US, were found to have critical vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities allowed attackers to gain administrative access remotely. Danfoss controllers, for example, used a daily changing password generated by publicly available firmware based on the date. This meant that a hacker could replicate the password on any device that hadn't received a recent update, affecting hundreds or thousands of stores.

The incident underscores the broader issue of cybersecurity in Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Multiple security advisories and public research reports have highlighted these vulnerabilities, but the necessary updates and patches have not been universally applied. The attack resulted in substantial financial losses due to food spoilage and property damage from fires.

This is not the first time that IoT devices have been targeted in such attacks. Previous incidents have shown that basic cybersecurity measures could have prevented these hacks. The lack of timely updates and patches remains a significant concern, as it leaves devices vulnerable to exploitation.

CONTEXT: The attack on France's supermarket refrigeration systems highlights the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures in IoT devices. As more devices become connected to the internet, the risk of such attacks increases, underscoring the importance of regular updates and patches to protect against vulnerabilities. The financial and safety implications of such incidents are significant, affecting both businesses and consumers.
