Apple Prepares to Launch Apple Intelligence in China Without AI-Powered Siri Features

Apple is preparing to launch its Apple Intelligence system in China in December 2024, with the release of iOS 27.3. However, the update will not include AI-powered Siri features due to local regulatory restrictions.
Apple initially announced Apple Intelligence in 2024 alongside iOS 18, but faced challenges in providing the system in the European Union and China. The tech giant has partnered with Alibaba to utilize models Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang for AI technologies in China, with Qwen expected to handle most of Apple Intelligence's features.
The iOS 27.3 update will not include AI-powered Siri features, and local regulations will limit text generation within some applications. Image editing tasks will use the Tongyi Wanxiang model, but local laws will prevent the launch of the Image Playground feature, resulting in limited Apple Intelligence features for Chinese users compared to the U.S. market.
Similar restrictions apply to the European Union, where AI-powered Siri features are not available on iPhones, iPads, or Apple Watches. Users of Mac and Apple Vision Pro devices in the EU will access these features when using a supported language, but they will not initially be available on iOS, iPadOS, or watchOS.
Users in both China and the EU may face longer wait times for AI-powered Siri features on their devices, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
**Context**: This development highlights the challenges tech companies face in navigating diverse regulatory environments, particularly in regions with stringent data and AI regulations. It also underscores the strategic importance of local partnerships in delivering tailored technological solutions.
