The 30th annual Gowanus Open Studios (GOS) took place in Brooklyn on Saturday, featuring over 100 participating sites. The event highlighted the neighborhood's industrial history and ongoing transformation, as well as the creative community that has formed along the Gowanus Canal.

The event featured a variety of artworks, including plein air pieces that documented the canal's water remediation efforts and familiar street corners. Many of the works showcased the neighborhood's architectural features and the canal's impact on the landscape.

Elizabeth O'Reilly, a landscape artist with a studio at 543 Union Street, has witnessed the neighborhood's significant changes since 1992. She displayed paintings and collages of the canal and neighborhood, many of which were created during the late 2000s and early 2010s, a period when the canal was designated a Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency.

O'Reilly noted the stark contrast between the neighborhood's past as a site of industrial abuse and its current state, with luxury high-rises in various stages of completion. Despite the changes, the canal still faces issues such as flooding with raw sewage during rain.

The event provided a platform for artists to showcase their work and engage with the community, offering a glimpse into the neighborhood's rich history and its ongoing evolution.

CONTEXT: The Gowanus Canal, once a hub of industrial activity, has undergone significant environmental remediation efforts in recent years. The neighborhood's transformation has led to a mix of old and new, with luxury developments standing alongside industrial remnants. The Gowanus Open Studios event reflects the neighborhood's dynamic nature and the creative community that continues to thrive amidst the changes.
