Algerian authorities in Souk Ahras announced the dismantling of a national cyber fraud network that targeted students and researchers. The network, which operated through a fake academic support platform on Facebook, was dismantled in October 2025.

The network, which was dismantled through a coordinated effort between the Economic and Financial Crimes Unit and the Cybercrime Unit, was found to have defrauded students and researchers by offering fake academic and research services. These services included assistance in preparing and publishing scientific articles in both local and international journals. Victims were initially contacted through the fake Facebook page and then directed to communicate via WhatsApp, where they were asked to transfer money for services they never received.

The investigation led to the identification of suspects and the seizure of equipment, documents, and mobile phone SIM cards. The network was also found to have converted the stolen funds into virtual assets. The investigation identified 35 potential victims from various regions and 419 individuals who may have been involved in the fraud.

Following legal procedures, a criminal case was filed against the suspects for forming a criminal association to commit fraud. The suspects were presented before the public prosecutor at Taourga Court, where they were remanded in custody.

CONTEXT: This case highlights the growing threat of cyber fraud targeting students and researchers, as well as the increasing use of virtual assets in money laundering schemes. It also underscores the importance of international cooperation in combating cybercrime and protecting vulnerable populations.
