Gaza Faces Bread Crisis as Flour Supplies Run Low

GAZA — Residents of Gaza are facing a bread crisis as flour supplies run critically low, leading to long queues at bakeries and concerns about food security. The situation has been exacerbated by the recent disruption of flour shipments, which has forced some bakeries to close and left others with dwindling stocks.
The crisis has been compounded by a shortage of other food items and rising prices, pushing families to reduce their meals. The Palestinian Center for Human Rights has reported that the scarcity of food and the difficulty in preparing meals have led to a resurgence of bread queues, with families struggling to secure basic food items.
Despite announcements of arrangements to bring in flour shipments through the Kerem Shalom crossing on Sunday, the crisis highlights the fragility of Gaza's bread supply. Just a few days of disrupted flour deliveries can paralyze bakeries and force residents to queue for bread, with production resumption dependent on the timely and regular arrival of flour shipments.
Abdul Nasser Al-Ajrami, head of the Gaza Bakeries Association, warned that seven remaining bakeries could halt operations within 48 hours if new flour supplies do not arrive. He stated that commercial flour has not entered Gaza for over ten days, and the shipments that did arrive before the disruption were quickly consumed, leaving no reserves.
Al-Ajrami explained that the lack of reserves is due to the rapid transition of the crisis from the crossings to the bakeries, with available quantities limited to what the bakeries themselves held. Frequent closures this month have further depleted these stocks.
The crisis is not limited to bread; there is also a shortage of vegetables and fruits, and rising food prices. This has led families to reduce their meals, with some relying on limited staples like bread, rice, and lentils. Abdul Aziz Said, a 65-year-old resident, reported that he often has to make do with one meal a day, despite his health needing regular and varied nutrition.
This situation underscores the broader challenges faced by Gaza's population, where food insecurity is a pressing issue.
CONTEXT: Gaza's bread crisis is a stark reminder of the broader humanitarian challenges faced by its population, including food insecurity and economic hardship. The situation highlights the urgent need for sustainable solutions to ensure the regular supply of essential goods and support for vulnerable families.
