Morocco's saffron harvest, vital for local economies, is underway but faces delays due to climate change and foreign competition. The harvest, which typically begins in October and peaks in November, is crucial for the local economy and employment in regions like Taliouine and Tazenakht.

Mohammed Baasid, head of the Moroccan Saffron Federation, reported that the harvest is in its early stages in some high-altitude mountainous regions, with the peak expected in the first half of next month. Climate changes in recent years have delayed the harvest, which requires specific weather conditions.

The harvest process is labor-intensive, involving manual collection of saffron threads from fields. The expected production for this season is anticipated to match or slightly exceed last year's output, ranging between 6 and 7 tons annually.

Despite efforts to boost domestic production, regions outside Taliouine and Tazenakht face challenges due to climate adaptation issues. The local product struggles with foreign competition, despite a 60% tariff increase on imports from countries like Iran and Pakistan.

A significant issue is the smuggling of foreign saffron into the local market, often labeled as general spices to avoid tariffs, flooding the market with imported products.

Baasid emphasized that deceptive practices, such as passing off imported saffron as Moroccan, are unacceptable as they mislead consumers. Moroccan saffron is renowned globally for its chemical composition, including picocrocin, crocin, and safranal.

**Context:** Morocco's saffron industry is a linchpin for local economies, providing income and jobs. However, climate change and foreign competition pose significant threats, impacting both harvest timelines and market dynamics. The industry's future hinges on addressing these challenges to maintain its global standing and economic contributions.
