The Gaza Karate Union announced the addition of 1,000 new members, including those with disabilities, during a press conference on Tuesday. The event, held at the Rashad al-Shawa Center in Gaza City, underscored the determination of Gaza's youth to continue sports despite the challenges posed by the recent war, displacement, and loss of livelihoods.
Dr. Yahya al-Khatib, the General Director of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, emphasized the significance of the union's efforts in reviving sports activities under current conditions. He praised the union's success in training over 1,000 players, including individuals with disabilities, demonstrating the resilience of Gaza's youth in maintaining their sports activities despite the hardships.
Captain Hassan al-Ra'i, Deputy President of the Palestinian Karate Union, highlighted the union's ongoing fieldwork within the refugee camps, defying the harsh conditions of bombardment, displacement, and suffering. He noted the significant losses suffered by the karate community during the war, including the deaths of 49 individuals, among them key sports figures.
Al-Ra'i called on international institutions and supporting agencies to provide necessary assistance to the players, particularly children with disabilities, to ensure their continued involvement in sports and development of their skills. He also mentioned the recent recognition of some members for their perseverance and dedication to their athletic journeys.
Dr. Ahed Frounah, Secretary-General of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate in Gaza, stressed the importance of sports in conveying the Palestinian people's message to the world. He highlighted that practicing karate symbolizes the Palestinians' commitment to life and resilience, despite the war's imposed restrictions, suffering, and attempts to deprive them of their basic rights.
Frounah urged media outlets to highlight the human and sports stories in Gaza, showcasing the examples of children and youth who persist in their athletic pursuits despite the harsh conditions, thereby bringing their reality and struggles to the global public's attention.
**Context:** The conflict in Gaza has led to significant destruction and displacement, affecting the lives of many, including young athletes. The Gaza Karate Union's efforts to continue and expand its activities reflect the broader struggle of Gaza's youth to maintain normalcy and hope amidst ongoing conflict.
