Algeria Publishes National Essential Medicines List

ALGIERS, Algeria — The Ministry of Pharmaceutical Industry in Algeria has published a national list of 424 essential medicines, categorized into 22 therapeutic areas. The list, announced on October 10, 2023, aims to guide the country's healthcare priorities and ensure the availability of necessary medications for its citizens.
The list was compiled by a multidisciplinary committee of experts, chaired by Professor Ammar Tabib, representing the Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry. The committee includes 21 members from various government sectors, including pharmaceutical industry, national defense, higher education, scientific research, health, labor, social security, and several national agencies and institutes focused on health and pharmaceuticals.
The committee's work followed a scientific methodology based on recommendations from the World Health Organization, with consideration for Algeria's unique healthcare system and population needs. The resulting list includes 1,066 pharmaceutical products, reflecting the importance of prioritizing essential medicines within the national healthcare system.
The committee's responsibilities extend beyond creating the list; they also include regular meetings to review and update it as needed. This approach ensures that the list remains a strategic tool for planning pharmaceutical needs, optimizing resource use, and improving the direction of production and importation according to health priorities. Ultimately, this effort aims to enhance pharmaceutical security and ensure the continuous availability of essential medicines.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen Algeria's healthcare system and improve access to essential medications. By prioritizing these medicines, Algeria seeks to address critical health needs and enhance the overall effectiveness of its healthcare services.
CONTEXT: The publication of this essential medicines list is a significant step in Algeria's healthcare strategy. It underscores the government's commitment to improving healthcare access and ensuring that citizens have access to necessary medications. This list will serve as a critical reference for healthcare planning, resource allocation, and the regulation of pharmaceutical production and importation. By aligning with global health standards and tailoring the list to Algeria's specific needs, the country aims to build a more resilient and effective healthcare system.
