France has imposed curfews in several cities following violent protests over the cost of living, with President Emmanuel Macron vowing firm action. The curfews, in effect from Wednesday, cover areas in Paris, Marseille, and Toulouse, following weekend violence that included looting and property damage. The French government has faced criticism for its handling of the unrest, which has drawn international attention.

The curfews in Paris, announced by the Paris Police Prefecture, affect several key locations including the Élysée Palace, the Matignon Palace, the National Assembly, the Senate, the Louvre Museum, and the Champs-Élysées. In Marseille, the curfew was imposed for the second night in a row, while in Toulouse, it will be in effect from Thursday to Sunday.

Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne met with union representatives on Wednesday to discuss ensuring the safety of protests. Macron, speaking from Qatar during a Gulf tour, stated that the state must not 'waiver' in punishing those responsible for the violence. He emphasized the importance of transparency in addressing the unrest and announced a meeting with intelligence agencies, the prime minister, and relevant ministers to receive a detailed report on recent events.

Macron acknowledged that measures taken since the beginning of the week, including curfews, have helped restore calm. He committed to firm action to prevent a recurrence of the 'unacceptable' scenes, while asserting that the situation does not yet warrant a state of emergency. The unrest has drawn international attention, with several countries, including the United States, China, and Germany, issuing travel advisories for their citizens in France.

Macron also addressed the international dimension of the protests, criticizing foreign leaders who he said were 'attacking France' in reference to comments by US President Joe Biden. He emphasized the importance of maintaining France's image both in the region and among its citizens.

CONTEXT: The protests and subsequent unrest come ahead of the upcoming presidential elections in France, with the government facing significant scrutiny over its handling of the situation.
