Black women entrepreneurs in the food industry are facing significant challenges due to systemic barriers, according to a recent study.

Lilly Jan, an assistant teaching professor in the Cornell Nolan School of Hotel Administration, encountered difficulties while trying to gather information on food industry businesses owned by Black women. The scarcity of available data highlights the lack of visibility and support for these entrepreneurs.

The obstacles faced by Black women in the food industry include limited access to funding, mentorship, and networking opportunities. These barriers often result in slower business growth and fewer opportunities for expansion.
