Elon Musk and his political action committee, America PAC, have settled a federal class action lawsuit on Thursday, avoiding court testimony. The lawsuit accused Musk and his PAC of deceiving voters in swing states who participated in $1 million giveaways organized before the 2024 presidential election.

The lawsuit alleged that Musk and his PAC misled voters by claiming they had an equal chance to win $1 million prizes if they signed a petition supporting 'free speech and the right to bear arms.' In reality, the winners were pre-selected, contrary to the belief that the winners would be randomly chosen.

Eighteen individuals were awarded the $1 million prizes, with giveaways occurring daily leading up to Election Day in 2024. The terms of the settlement have not been publicly disclosed. Musk and America PAC have denied any wrongdoing in the lawsuit. A federal judge had previously ruled that Musk would be required to testify in the case.

Musk had endorsed President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, contributing over $200 million to Trump's campaign through America PAC and another aligned PAC. The giveaways, announced just weeks before Election Day, targeted voters in key states including Pennsylvania, Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Carolina. Critics, including election lawyer Rick Hasen, argued that the giveaways violated federal laws prohibiting payment for voting or voter registration. Musk's representatives had contended that the $1 million payments were compensation for acting as spokespeople for America PAC. The Justice Department had reportedly warned Musk that the giveaways might be illegal, with potential penalties for violating the federal law.

CONTEXT: This settlement highlights ongoing debates about the influence of wealthy individuals and political action committees in elections, as well as the legal boundaries surrounding voter incentives and political contributions.
