Niamey, Niger – The Nigerien government has accused Chinese oil companies of failing to meet their obligations under a partnership agreement signed five months ago. The agreement, signed in May, aimed to resolve a year-long dispute between Niger and the Chinese firms.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Bakary Yaou Sangaré met with representatives from the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Wapco, and Soraz this week. During a press conference, he criticized the companies for not adhering to the terms of the agreement and gave them a 45-day deadline to comply.

The agreement, which was the result of a year of negotiations, was intended to address issues related to the exploitation and transportation of petroleum in Niger. The Chinese companies involved in the agreement are responsible for significant oil operations in the country.

This is not the first time Niger has had issues with foreign oil companies. In 2021, Niger had to deal with a dispute with a French oil company.

CONTEXT/ BACKGROUND: Niger, a landlocked country in West Africa, is heavily dependent on its oil resources. The country's economy relies significantly on the revenue generated from oil exports, making the operations of foreign oil companies crucial to its economic stability. The recent accusations against Chinese oil firms highlight the complexities and challenges of managing foreign investments in the oil sector, particularly in resource-rich but economically vulnerable countries like Niger.
