The University of Arkansas' School of Art, within the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, has opened applications for its tuition-free graduate programs for the 2027-2028 academic year. Applications are being accepted until January 15, 2027.

The school offers four graduate programs, including the M.A. in Art Education, the M.A. in Art History, and the Master of Design. These programs provide graduate assistantships, stipends, and scholarships, with over $3.5 million in student support annually. This support includes funding for conferences, research, and travel.

The M.A. in Art Education is the first graduate-level art education program in Arkansas. It focuses on interdisciplinary, collaborative teaching and research methods to benefit students across Arkansas and globally. Students will gain experience in various educational settings, including schools, museums, and communities.

The M.A. in Art History program specializes in the study of the Arts of the Americas and has a formal partnership with the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. This partnership provides graduate students with internship opportunities, access to archives, and a global network of curators. The program emphasizes hands-on learning and theme-based curriculum, with opportunities for travel and curatorial projects.

The Master of Design program focuses on graphic and communication design, preparing students for emerging roles and designing with accountability. Graduate students have led professional development field trips and worked on design projects with local businesses, including Houndstooth Clothing and the City of Fayetteville's Arts & Culture Division.

Graduate students in the Master of Design program have also traveled for research purposes, enhancing their practical experience and knowledge in the field.

CONTEXT: The University of Arkansas' initiative to offer tuition-free graduate programs in art is significant as it aims to attract and support talented individuals in the field, fostering a new generation of art educators, historians, and designers. The programs' emphasis on interdisciplinary learning, practical experience, and global partnerships sets a benchmark for art education, potentially influencing similar initiatives in other institutions.
