Art Basel Paris has decided to close two days early, on Friday, October 23, at 7 PM, due to anticipated protests across Paris. The event, originally scheduled to run through Sunday, October 25, at the Grand Palais, will end early to ensure the safety of visitors.

Organizers cited ongoing nationwide protests over France's education system and public services as the reason for the early closure. This decision comes after a temporary lockdown during the event's installation phase on October 17. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has announced that military forces from Operation Sentinelle will be deployed over the weekend to manage protesters. Operation Sentinelle was initiated following the Charlie Hebdo and Hyper Cacher attacks in January 2015 to combat terrorism.

Art Basel's chief artistic officer, Vincenzo de Bellis, and Karim Crippa, the Paris fair's director, urged galleries to keep their exhibits intact until the fair's closure and to await further instructions before beginning the dismantling process. A gallerist, speaking anonymously, confirmed that specific instructions for operations and dismantling are still pending.

Several artist advocacy groups and labor unions, including the Syndicat National des Artistes Plasticiennes, have planned a protest outside the fair on Saturday at 4 PM. A flyer for the protest criticizes the 'privatization of culture and an art market that accompanies the extreme right-wing shift in our country.' Additionally, some artists and organizations have stated that their artworks will be taken down or dismantled prematurely.

Fondation Louis Vuitton has also announced it will close on Saturday, October 4.

CONTEXT: The early closure of Art Basel Paris highlights the impact of nationwide protests on cultural events and the measures taken to ensure public safety during periods of civil unrest. The deployment of military forces for crowd control and the responses from artist advocacy groups underscore the broader social and political context in which such events occur.
