Wall Street's main indices closed lower on Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling by 1.23% and the S&P 500 declining by 0.52%. This downturn was driven by surging oil prices and uncertainty surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) investment, ahead of a week filled with corporate earnings reports and a Federal Reserve policy meeting.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 652.82 points to 52,215.16, while the S&P 500 lost 39.75 points to 7,623.68. The Nasdaq Composite also saw a decrease, slipping 0.21% to 25,955.34, following its steepest single-day decline since June on Thursday.

For the week, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both experienced declines, with the S&P 500 falling 0.52% and the Nasdaq losing 0.7%, marking their second consecutive weekly drops. In contrast, the Dow gained 0.4%, extending its weekly winning streak to three.

Oil prices surged, with Brent crude futures settling 3.1% higher at $116.72 a barrel, reaching their highest level since June 2022. This increase was due to escalating Middle East tensions, which raised concerns over global energy supplies. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also gained 3.8% to $103.27.

The S&P 500 energy sector climbed 2.5% to a record high, with notable gains from Chevron and ConocoPhillips. However, most other sectors declined, including consumer staples, consumer discretionary, and financials. American Express fell 3.62% despite raising its profit outlook, after announcing plans to cut 5% of its workforce. JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup also saw declines, losing 1.45% and 1.58%, respectively.

Telecommunications stocks also slid after a report that SpaceX was seeking thousands of cell sites for a potential fourth US wireless carrier. AT&T and T-Mobile each fell nearly 8%, while Verizon declined 1.2%. SpaceX rose 1.9%, and tower operators Crown Castle and American Tower gained 9% and 4%, respectively.

Technology shares steadied, with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.35%. However, investors remain concerned about the cost of building AI infrastructure and how quickly companies will generate returns.

Investors are awaiting the Federal Reserve's policy meeting on Wednesday, where interest rates are widely expected to remain steady. However, investors will be looking for clues on the possibility of a December hike. Rising oil prices and persistent inflation remain key concerns.

**Context:** This matters because the performance of US stock markets can have significant implications for global financial markets and investor sentiment. The fluctuations in oil prices and the uncertainty surrounding AI investment highlight the complex interplay between geopolitical tensions, energy markets, and technological advancements, all of which can influence economic policies and corporate strategies.
