Taxi drivers in Rabat, Morocco, have formally requested an increase in fares due to rising fuel costs. The demand, submitted to the regional authorities of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, affects routes operating between Rabat, Salé, and Temara. The proposed increase, agreed upon by professional organizations, is currently under review by the authorities. Drivers cite inadequate support in mitigating the impact of fuel price hikes, which have doubled in recent times.

Mohammed Al-Araby, a local representative of the first-class taxi drivers union in Rabat, highlighted the challenges faced by drivers. He mentioned that the cost of maintaining large taxis has significantly increased, with repair costs for common technical issues rising substantially. This, combined with stagnant incomes, has exacerbated the financial burden on drivers. Additionally, the rising cost of living and essential services has further strained their livelihoods.

Al-Araby stated that a meeting was held with the economic affairs head of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region to discuss these issues. The drivers requested intervention to correct the situation and provide necessary support to alleviate the impact of inflation. They proposed an increase in fares across all routes. A second meeting is scheduled to follow up on these critical issues and find sustainable solutions to improve the drivers' working and living conditions.

Mohammed Zrouali, a first-class taxi driver and regional representative of the National Union of Taxi Drivers in Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, attributed the fare increase demand to the broader inflation affecting various sectors, including fuel prices. He also noted that many drivers do not benefit from the allocated support, and those who do face delays in receiving it.

CONTEXT: The fare increase request by taxi drivers in Rabat underscores the broader economic challenges faced by the transportation sector in Morocco. Rising fuel costs and inadequate support mechanisms have put significant financial pressure on drivers, affecting their daily livelihoods and operational costs. This situation highlights the need for effective policy interventions to support the sector and ensure sustainable operations amidst economic fluctuations.
