Global Gas Prices Surge, Opening Market for Algerian Supplier

Global gas prices have risen sharply, reaching over 90 euros per megawatt/hour in Europe on Monday, October 19. This surge presents a significant opportunity for Algeria's state-owned hydrocarbons company, Sonatrach, to increase its gas exports to the international market.

Energy expert Baghdad Mendouche attributes the price increase to ongoing disruptions in the Middle East and the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for nearly a quarter of global gas production.

The current market conditions are particularly favorable for Sonatrach, as the high prices create an attractive environment for selling additional gas quantities in the free market.

The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, remains a pivotal route for global energy supplies, with approximately 25% of the world's liquefied natural gas (LNG) and a significant portion of global oil exports passing through it.
