Jibril Rajoub, a senior official in the Palestinian Fatah movement, has sparked debate by discussing the motivations behind resistance operations in 1996, during an interview on Arab TV.

Rajoub claimed that the operations, which included suicide bombings, were directed by Khaled Mashal, then the political leader of Hamas, with the aim of toppling the Israeli government led by Shimon Peres and bringing Benjamin Netanyahu to power.

Rajoub's statements were based on testimony from Mohammad Abu Warda, a former detainee of the Al-Qassam Brigades, which was obtained during his detention in Jericho.

The Israeli journalist Yossi Melman had previously questioned the credibility of Abu Warda's testimony, citing the conditions of his interrogation and detention.

Hamas has denied Rajoub's account, stating that it is 'baseless' and contradicts the principles of national responsibility and the current atmosphere of Palestinian dialogue.

Rajoub's comments have raised two key questions: the historical accuracy of the operations and their motivations, and the political implications of raising such allegations at a time when Palestinian unity and trust are being rebuilt.

Critics argue that framing the resistance operations solely as a response to Israeli politics, rather than as a reaction to Israeli aggression and occupation, risks decontextualizing the Palestinian struggle and reducing it to a tool in Israeli domestic politics.
