Researchers have found that physically interacting with dogs can help protect individuals from future stress, according to a study published in June 2023.

The study, conducted by a team of scientists, involved 101 participants who were exposed to a stressful situation. Half of the participants were allowed to interact with a dog before the stressful event, while the other half did not.

The participants who interacted with the dogs showed lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol following the stressful situation. This suggests that the interaction helped mitigate the stress response.

The researchers noted that the type of interaction mattered. Those who engaged in physical contact, such as petting or hugging the dog, experienced the most significant reduction in stress levels.

The study also found that the duration of the interaction was important. Participants who spent more time with the dogs before the stressful event showed greater reductions in cortisol levels.

The findings highlight the potential benefits of pet interaction as a simple and accessible way to manage stress. The researchers suggest that incorporating more physical interactions with pets into daily routines could help individuals better cope with future stressors.

CONTEXT: This study adds to a growing body of research on the health benefits of pet ownership, particularly dogs. Previous studies have shown that pets can provide emotional support, encourage physical activity, and even improve cardiovascular health. The latest findings suggest that the simple act of touching a dog can have immediate and lasting effects on stress levels, offering a practical tool for stress management.
