Protests across France over rising living costs and deteriorating public services turned violent on Saturday, resulting in injuries to over 500 police officers and emergency personnel and at least 1,800 arrests, according to French authorities.

Estimates of participants ranged from 550,000 to 800,000 people, with most demonstrations remaining peaceful. However, violence erupted in several major cities, including Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, and Limoges.

In Paris, clashes between protesters and police led to the use of tear gas, with masked groups erecting barricades and damaging businesses. Shops were looted, bank branches vandalized, and vehicles set on fire. Public buildings were also targeted, with Limoges' historic city hall severely damaged by fire, and incidents reported at city halls and municipal offices in Marseille and Lyon.

The protests followed weeks of student demonstrations in economically disadvantaged suburbs of Paris, initially focused on teacher shortages, school facilities, and education funding. The movement later expanded to include broader demands related to living costs, wages, and public spending.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence and promised accountability for those responsible. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez attributed some of the violence to far-left groups and opportunistic looters, with criminal investigations underway.

CONTEXT: The unrest has increased pressure on Macron's administration ahead of France's next presidential election, amid public dissatisfaction with living conditions and public services.
