Shares of AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile experienced a decline in premarket trading on Friday following reports that SpaceX, the aerospace company owned by Elon Musk, is in discussions with cellular tower companies to secure around 80,000 sites across the United States. This move is part of SpaceX's strategy to establish Starlink Mobile as a fourth major national wireless carrier.

Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources, reported that SpaceX has engaged in private discussions with at least one of the largest cellular tower owners in the country, Crown Castle. Earlier this week, Crown Castle's CEO, Chris Hillabrant, acknowledged during an earnings call that the company is in talks with various parties, including satellite-based internet providers like SpaceX and Amazon's Project Kuiper.

During SpaceX's earnings call on Tuesday, Elon Musk confirmed the company's plans to build a terrestrial wireless network to support Starlink's satellite service. Musk also forecasted that with enhanced connectivity, Starlink has the potential to generate several hundred billion dollars in annual revenue, although he did not provide specifics on the timeline or the methods to achieve this goal.

SpaceX's reported target of 80,000 cell sites underscores the scale of its terrestrial network ambitions. The Wireless Infrastructure Association estimates that the U.S. had approximately 254,850 macrocell sites and 158,500 purpose-built cellular towers at the end of 2025.

The market reaction to these developments saw shares of the three major U.S. mobile carriers slide in premarket trading. AT&T shares dropped 3.74% to $21.89, Verizon fell 3.25% to $43.73, and T-Mobile's stock decreased 3.13% to $153.82. Conversely, Crown Castle shares surged 7.31% in early trading on Friday, as potential deals with SpaceX could be worth billions. SpaceX's shares, which had tumbled 9.14% on Thursday amid a broader market downturn, were up 3.07% to $149.19 in early trading on Friday.

Earlier this month, SpaceX announced it had agreed to acquire nationwide low-band wireless spectrum from investment firm Grain Management, pending FCC approval. This acquisition is seen as a strategic move to support SpaceX's plans for Starlink Mobile.

CONTEXT: This development is significant as it marks SpaceX's entry into the competitive U.S. wireless market, potentially disrupting the existing landscape dominated by AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. The move highlights the growing convergence of satellite and terrestrial networks, and the potential for new players to challenge established telecommunications companies.
