Artist Blends Mythology and Modernity in Chicago Exhibition

Chicago-based artist Olivia Zubko opened her solo exhibition titled 'Nymphaeum' at Western Exhibitions on October 2023. The show explores the intersection of classical mythology and modern bathrooms, creating a unique and thought-provoking experience for visitors.
Zubko's work features wall sculptures that pay homage to lavatories, evoking a sense of devotion reminiscent of historical nymphaeums. These ancient monuments, dedicated to water nymphs, were built around natural grottoes during the Hellenistic and Roman imperial periods. The artist's sculptures are crafted from glazed stoneware, glazed porcelain, and metal hardware, blending classical aesthetics with contemporary materials.
One of the notable pieces in the exhibition is 'Echo’s Basin' (2026), a sculpture that incorporates glazed stoneware, glazed porcelain, and metal hardware. Another striking piece is 'Circe' (2026), which includes synthetic hair alongside glazed stoneware. These works highlight the unsettled discomfort of intimacy, a theme that pervades the entire exhibition.
The exhibition is open to the public and will run until December 2023.
**Context:** The exhibition 'Nymphaeum' is significant because it bridges the gap between ancient mythology and modern life, offering a fresh perspective on how these timeless stories continue to influence contemporary art and culture. By focusing on bathrooms, a universal and intimate space, Zubko invites viewers to reflect on the rituals of allurement and the enduring appeal of classical narratives.
