Algeria's President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced that the country aims to produce 84% of its pharmaceutical needs domestically within five years. This target represents a substantial increase from the current 10% of domestic production.

The announcement was made during a meeting with the Minister of Health and Population, as well as other officials. The President emphasized the importance of reducing dependence on imported drugs and strengthening the domestic pharmaceutical industry.

Tebboune highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance Algeria's self-sufficiency in various sectors. The government plans to invest in infrastructure, technology, and human resources to achieve this goal.

The President also noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of having a robust domestic pharmaceutical industry. The pandemic has disrupted global supply chains, making it crucial for countries to produce essential medicines locally.

The government aims to support local pharmaceutical companies and encourage new investments in the sector. This includes providing incentives for research and development, as well as improving regulatory frameworks to facilitate the production and distribution of medicines.

Tebboune also mentioned the importance of training and educating healthcare professionals to ensure the effective use of domestically produced medicines. The government plans to collaborate with educational institutions to develop specialized training programs.

CONTEXT: This initiative is significant as it aligns with Algeria's broader economic and health strategies. By increasing domestic drug production, Algeria aims to reduce its reliance on imports, enhance its economic stability, and improve public health outcomes. The move also reflects a global trend towards greater self-sufficiency in critical sectors, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
