Algeria: Interior Minister Announces Expanded Governor Powers

Algeria's Interior Minister, Ibrahim Murad, announced on Saturday that the 2027 finance bill includes legislative measures to improve local governance and enhance local tax resources. This will be achieved by expanding the scope of certain fees, improving collection mechanisms, and increasing governors' powers to oversee investment programs. The aim is to improve coordination between central decision-making and local implementation, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of public projects.
Murad presented these details during a session of the Finance and Budget Committee of the National People's Assembly, chaired by Abdul Hafiz Ben Brim. The session also included the Minister of Parliamentary Relations, Najiba Jalali.
Murad emphasized that this approach reflects the sector's commitment to optimal use of financial resources, directing them towards actual development priorities. This will also strengthen the capacity of local communities to perform their duties, promoting balanced development, modern and effective management, and public services that meet citizens' expectations.
This initiative aligns with the ongoing implementation of the President's program and the goals of building a victorious Algeria.
CONTEXT: This development underscores Algeria's efforts to decentralize governance, improve public service delivery, and enhance local economic development. By empowering governors to oversee investment programs, the government aims to ensure that financial resources are used effectively and that local communities are better equipped to address their development needs. This move is part of a broader strategy to achieve balanced and sustainable development across the country.
