Luxury retailers in Paris have fortified their stores and prepared for early closures ahead of planned protests this Saturday. The demonstrations, expected to draw student groups and the Yellow Vest movement, have prompted retailers to take precautions following widespread damage and looting during previous protests.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that 70,000 police officers, supported by specialist units, will be deployed to maintain order. The protests are anticipated to focus on high living costs and cuts to public services, with central Paris as the main gathering point.

Several luxury retailers and fashion brands have implemented security measures. A Rolex retailer and a De Beers store near Place Vendôme will remain closed on Saturday. Richemont-owned IWC stores will decide on early closures based on the situation. Adidas and Boss stores on the Champs-Élysées have announced closures, while Swatch Group stores plan to shut early. A Lacoste store, damaged last weekend, is now covered with metal cages, and a café owned by the brand is also boarded up.

LVMH brands Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Bulgari have increased security around their stores near Place Vendôme and deployed additional private guards in high-end shopping districts. Department store Printemps has reinforced windows and entrances, repaired damage, and increased security staffing. Hermès has also strengthened security at its French stores.

This comes as luxury brands face slowing demand, subdued consumer sentiment, and weaker tourism linked to the Iran war. LVMH, Hermès, and Kering reported disappointing quarterly results this month, adding pressure on an industry that relies heavily on international shoppers visiting France for high-end purchases.

Context: The protests pose a significant challenge for luxury retailers in Paris, as they rely on high-end shoppers and tourism. The unrest coincides with broader economic pressures, including slowing demand and geopolitical tensions, which have already impacted the industry's performance.
