Critics in Algeria have expressed concerns over the methodology of modernist thinkers, known as “hadathiyoon,” who often rely on Western, rather than Islamic, sources when critiquing Islamic heritage.

These modernists, who prefer to be called “researchers” and “modernists,” are noted for their criticism of Islamic heritage and hostility towards Islamic traditions. Critics argue that they do not engage directly with Islamic sources but rather depend on secondary sources, often from Western scholars who are critical of Islam.

Mohammed Arkoun, a prominent figure influencing Algerian modernists, is cited as an example. Arkoun's writings on Islamic heritage frequently reference Western, rather than Islamic, sources. Critics contend that this approach leads to a distorted understanding of Islamic heritage, as it relies on interpretations that are often hostile to Islam.

This reliance on Western sources is seen as problematic because it often leads to a superficial understanding of Islamic history and heritage. Critics argue that modernists in Algeria frequently turn to Western scholarship that emphasizes sensationalism, conspiracy theories, and preconceived notions, rather than engaging with primary Islamic sources.

Critics also point out that modernists often reference works by thinkers who have gained prominence in Western capitals, further reinforcing the idea that their approach is heavily influenced by Western perspectives.
