Anthropic, the developer of Claude, reported a net loss of $80.7 billion for the first half of 2026, a significant increase from the $13 billion loss reported in the same period last year. The company is preparing for a potential November initial public offering (IPO).

The loss was largely attributed to a $72 billion noncash charge linked to convertible debt. Despite the loss, Anthropic's revenue grew substantially, reaching $16.3 billion in the six months through June, up from $1.1 billion in the same period last year. However, spending on computing capacity and infrastructure rose to nearly $9 billion from $2.3 billion. The company has committed at least $518 billion to cloud services and computing infrastructure over the next decade.

Anthropic's third-quarter revenue increased 45% sequentially to $16.8 billion. The company was valued at $965 billion following a $65 billion financing round in May. Some investors are now considering a valuation of approximately $1.5 trillion for the proposed listing. Anthropic confirmed in June that it had confidentially submitted a draft registration statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Anthropic has also presented US lawmakers with draft legislation aimed at regulating advanced AI models. The proposal suggests that a federal court could block the release or use of such models if they pose a foreseeable and imminent risk of more than $1 billion in damages, or of killing or seriously injuring more than 50 people. The thresholds would apply to threats involving biological weapons, cyberattacks, or AI systems evading developers' controls. Independent evaluators registered with the Commerce Department would periodically assess advanced AI systems and report qualifying risks.

**Context:** Anthropic's financial performance and regulatory proposals are significant as the company prepares for a potential IPO and as the AI industry faces increasing scrutiny over safety and ethical concerns.
