Tunisia's Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) has announced the preliminary results of candidacies for the upcoming local elections, scheduled for November 28, 2026. This announcement comes after the deadline for candidacy submissions and reviews.

The ISIE reported that out of 5,631 lists submitted for municipal council elections, 3 were rejected, constituting 0.05% of the total. The rejection rate for regional council elections was higher, with 6 out of 434 lists rejected, amounting to 1.38%. The primary reasons for rejection included incomplete documentation and missing signatures.

The demographic breakdown of candidates shows a significant youth participation, with 87,995 candidates aged 40 or younger, making up 54.02% of the total candidates. Women constituted 11.86% of the candidates, with 19,327 women running for office. Additionally, 78,959 candidates, or 48.48% of the total, hold a university degree.

Candidates whose applications were rejected have the option to appeal the decision in administrative courts. The ISIE will continue to accept replacements for rejected candidates until October 28, 2026. The authority cited several reasons for the rejections, including failure to submit required legal documents, not being registered on the voter list for the constituency, not meeting the minimum age requirement of 23 years, and not completing national service or obtaining an exemption. Other reasons included final convictions for serious crimes, unresolved tax issues, and being known for having ties to questionable financial or business activities that could influence the election process.

Rejected candidates can appeal the decision in administrative courts, and the ISIE will continue to accept replacements for rejected candidates until October 28, 2026.

The ISIE's announcement provides a comprehensive overview of the candidacy process and highlights the stringent criteria that candidates must meet to participate in the upcoming local elections.

CONTEXT: The upcoming local elections in Tunisia are a crucial step in the country's democratic process, as they will determine the composition of municipal and regional councils. The high participation of youth and the significant number of university-educated candidates indicate a growing engagement of educated youth in the political process. The rejection of some candidacies due to legal and procedural issues underscores the importance of adhering to electoral regulations and the ISIE's commitment to ensuring fair and transparent elections.
