Police in South Africa have detained a pastor and his wife following a raid on a church-run rehabilitation center in Mpumalanga province. The operation, conducted on October 10, 2023, uncovered distressing living conditions for the 200 individuals found at the facility.

The provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, confirmed the arrests and the discovery of the substandard living conditions. The pastor and his wife are being held on charges related to human trafficking and operating an unlicensed care facility.

According to Mdhluli, the investigation was prompted by a tip-off from a concerned citizen. The raid was carried out by a joint task force comprising members from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Social Development.

The individuals found at the facility, which was being run as a rehabilitation center, were reportedly subjected to inhumane treatment. The conditions were described as deplorable, with overcrowding and inadequate sanitation.

All 200 individuals have been taken to a safe location where they are receiving medical attention and psychological support. Social workers are also assessing their needs and working to reunite them with their families.

The pastor and his wife are expected to appear in court on October 13, 2023, to face charges. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are appealing for more information from the public.

In a related development, the Department of Social Development has announced that it will conduct a thorough review of all church-run rehabilitation centers in the province to ensure compliance with regulations and standards.

CONTEXT: The arrest of the pastor and his wife highlights the ongoing issue of unlicensed and unregulated rehabilitation centers in South Africa. This incident underscores the need for stricter oversight and enforcement of regulations to protect vulnerable individuals seeking help.
