Research Explores Impact of Obesity on Dogs' Cognitive Health

STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA — A student researcher at Oklahoma State University is investigating how obesity affects the cognitive health of aging dogs. Alexandra Genualdi presented her findings in September at the American Physiological Society's 2026 Comparative Physiology conference in Orlando, Florida.

Genualdi's research focuses on understanding the effects of obesity on dogs' cognitive health as they age. While significant progress has been made in understanding human aging, less is known about how other species, including dogs, experience cognitive changes with age and obesity.

Genualdi's study aims to fill this knowledge gap by examining the potential impact of excess weight on a dog's brain function. The research is part of a broader effort to enhance the well-being of aging dogs and improve their quality of life.

Obesity is a growing concern in the canine population, with many dogs carrying extra weight. This research could provide valuable insights into how obesity affects dogs' cognitive health, potentially leading to better preventive measures and treatments.

Genualdi's work is part of a larger body of research that seeks to understand the complex interplay between aging, obesity, and cognitive health in various species. The findings from this study could have implications for both veterinary medicine and human health, as dogs and humans share many similarities in their aging processes.

CONTEXT: Understanding how obesity affects the cognitive health of aging dogs could lead to better preventive measures and treatments, enhancing the well-being of pets and potentially offering insights into human health.
