Italian labor unions have announced a one-hour regional strike and a protest following the death of a 31-year-old Moroccan worker in a construction accident in Florence, Italy. The incident occurred on Thursday, October 13.

The unions, including the Florence branch of the Italian General Confederation of Labor, the Italian Federation of Building and Construction Workers (Fillea CGIL), and other branches such as UIL-TRASPORTI, have expressed outrage over the conditions of safety in the workplace.

The unions have highlighted the frequency of fatalities in construction sites, including major projects managed by leading contractors. They have called for stricter safety measures, better training, and more effective oversight to prevent such incidents. The unions emphasized that worker safety should be the top priority and that expressions of sorrow are not enough.

The protest, scheduled for Monday, October 19, will include a one-hour strike from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM and a demonstration outside the Foster construction site on Via Serconderia in Florence, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM. The unions are demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Moroccan worker's death.

The deceased worker was a member of the Filca-Cisl union. Fabio Franchi, the union's president, stated that repeated calls for better safety measures have gone unheeded. He emphasized the need for clear regulations, better training, and stricter enforcement of safety protocols.

The unions have called for a unified front to address safety concerns, stressing that current protocols and guidelines are insufficient. They have demanded clearer rules for oversight, training, and awareness to prevent future tragedies.

Florence has seen repeated incidents of worker fatalities in construction sites, underscoring the need for improved safety measures. The unions have vowed to continue their efforts to ensure that workers can return home safely after their shifts.

CONTEXT: This incident highlights ongoing concerns about workplace safety in Italy, particularly in the construction sector. The unions' response underscores the need for stricter regulations and better enforcement of safety protocols to protect workers' lives.
