BEIRUT — Talks between Lebanese and Israeli military delegations, mediated by the United States, ended without agreement on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The discussions, held in the Lebanese border town of Naqoura, focused on a maritime border dispute and a contentious land area known as Shebaa Farms.

Lebanon and Israel have been engaged in indirect negotiations since 2019. The talks are part of a broader effort to resolve longstanding border disputes and tensions.

Lebanon has demanded that Israel withdraw from the Shebaa Farms area, which it considers Lebanese territory. Israel, however, claims the area as part of the Golan Heights, which it annexed in 1981.

The maritime border dispute centers on an 860-square-kilometer area in the Mediterranean Sea, rich in natural gas reserves. Lebanon has accused Israel of encroaching on its territorial waters, while Israel maintains that the maritime border has not been clearly defined.

Despite the lack of progress, both sides have agreed to continue discussions in the future. The United States, which has been mediating the talks, has expressed hope that the negotiations will eventually lead to a resolution.

Context/Background: The ongoing disputes between Lebanon and Israel have been a source of tension in the region for decades. The maritime border dispute, in particular, has significant economic implications, as the disputed area is believed to contain substantial natural gas reserves. The resolution of these disputes could have far-reaching effects on regional stability and energy security.
