Three environmental groups have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over a road expansion project in Utah's Nine Mile Canyon. The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA), the Nine Mile Canyon Coalition (NMCC), and the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) submitted the complaint on October 6, 2020, challenging the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) approval of a road expansion proposal. The groups allege that the project, aimed at expediting oil tanker truck transit, will cause damage to Indigenous petroglyphs, historic structures, and habitats of threatened wildlife species.

The lawsuit claims that the Trump administration deliberately bypassed the approval process and rejected public involvement. The environmental groups accuse the BLM of failing to analyze and disclose the potential impacts of the road revision and increased traffic on cultural, environmental, and historic levels. The complaint also states that the BLM did not consult the United States Fish and Wildlife Service regarding potential impacts on endangered and threatened wildlife species, including the Mexican spotted owl. The groups assert that the BLM violated multiple preservation and land use acts through its procedural omissions.

The BLM has declined to comment on the matter, citing pending litigation. The lawsuit was filed in response to the BLM's approval of the Duchesne County proposal, which aims to expedite oil tanker truck transit through the canyon. The environmental groups are seeking to halt the project's progress and ensure that proper environmental and cultural impact assessments are conducted.
