Gaza's Collapsing Homes Pose Urgent Risk to Displaced Residents

Gaza's damaged homes, exacerbated by ongoing military operations, pose a significant threat to displaced residents. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that 82% of Gaza's buildings have been damaged, with 134,422 buildings destroyed and 13,848 severely damaged, as of June 16, 2026.
The Palestinian Civil Defense in Gaza issued a warning on Monday about the imminent collapse of damaged homes in the eastern part of the region. The warning comes amid intensified forced displacement and damage to hundreds of tents housing displaced residents due to Israeli military operations.
Ongoing airstrikes and gunfire have caused repeated displacement of families, with significant damage to homes and tents, particularly in the Shuja'iya, Tuffah, and Zaytoun areas east of Gaza City, as well as the Banu Suheila roundabout, east of the Hamas Tower, and the eastern part of Khan Younis.
Civil Defense expressed grave concern over the escalating forced displacement, especially around the area known as the 'Yellow Line' in eastern Gaza. They warned that continued Israeli aggression could force thousands of displaced individuals to seek alternative shelter, further exacerbating the housing crisis.
This situation is compounded by the approaching winter, with 162,000 tents in disrepair and 255 buildings at risk of collapse, according to UN satellite imagery analysis by the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT).
Ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement by Israel, particularly in eastern Gaza, have intensified the damage to residential areas, increasing the risk of collapses that could be fatal to residents.
CONTEXT: The situation in Gaza highlights the urgent need for international intervention to address the housing crisis and protect displaced residents from the dangers posed by damaged infrastructure and ongoing military operations. The high number of damaged buildings and the approaching winter exacerbate the humanitarian crisis, making it imperative for the international community to take immediate action to mitigate the risks faced by Gaza's population.
