Qatar Airways Group announced on Thursday its first Japanese aircraft financing agreement, marking a significant move in its fleet investment strategy. The deal, facilitated with HSBC and JP Lease Products & Services (JLPS), covers three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners as part of a broader program aimed at financing seven aircraft.

The agreement utilizes a Japanese Operating Lease with Call Option (JOLCO) structure, which integrates both debt and equity financing with an option to purchase the aircraft. HSBC is acting as the debt arranger and sole lender, while JLPS is underwriting and arranging the equity portion. This transaction is the first of three planned under Qatar Airways' inaugural Japanese financing program, with JLPS serving as the equity arranger for all three deals.

Qatar Airways Group CEO Hamad Al Khater emphasized the carrier's intent to maintain a consistent presence in the Japanese leasing market. The airline aims to diversify its funding sources and expand its investor base in Asia through this arrangement. The specific value and terms of the financing were not disclosed.

This financing agreement aligns with Qatar Airways' ongoing fleet investment strategy. In 2025, the airline signed agreements with Boeing and GE Aerospace to acquire and service up to 210 aircraft and 400 engines. The airline reported a post-tax profit of $1.94 billion for the financial year ended March 2026, with revenue reaching $23 billion. During this period, Qatar Airways carried 41.8 million passengers and operated a fleet of 313 aircraft serving 183 destinations.

Qatar Airways plans to execute two additional financing transactions under this program, bringing the total number of aircraft financed to seven. The next agreements will further extend the carrier's use of Japanese financing beyond the initial three aircraft. Al Khater described the JOLCO market as a long-term funding source for future fleet requirements.

CONTEXT: This deal signifies Qatar Airways' strategic move to diversify its funding sources and expand its investor base in Asia, particularly in the Japanese leasing market. It underscores the airline's commitment to maintaining a strong financial position while continuing to invest in its fleet and operational capabilities.
