Palestinian Elections Delayed to September 2027

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced on October 10 that the country's legislative and presidential elections, originally scheduled for 2026 and early 2027, will now be held simultaneously on September 11, 2027.

The decision to delay the elections comes after the Palestinian authorities cited obstacles in organizing the vote in Jerusalem-East and the Gaza Strip. Israel has reportedly denied access to Palestinian electoral officials in these areas.

This is not the first time Abbas has postponed elections. In 2021, he called for legislative and presidential elections, but they were indefinitely postponed due to a lack of guarantees for their organization in Jerusalem-East.

The Palestinian legislative elections, which have been demanded by the international community, including the European Union, were initially planned for November 28, 2026. The presidential election was expected to take place early in 2027.

The Palestinian Legislative Council, equivalent to a parliament, has not convened since a split between Fatah and Hamas in 2007. Fatah, the party of President Abbas, controls the Palestinian Authority in parts of the occupied West Bank, while Hamas governs the Gaza Strip.

Abbas, who was elected president in 2005, has remained in power despite the expiration of his term in 2009 and has been governing by decree since then.

This delay in elections comes amidst ongoing tensions and political divisions within the Palestinian territories.
