Moroccan Women's Rights Group Calls for Parliamentary Equality Committee

RABAT, Morocco — The Democratic Association of Moroccan Women, an advisory body to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, has called for the establishment of a permanent committee dedicated to equality and the fight against violence and discrimination within Morocco's House of Representatives. The group emphasized that embedding these principles within the institutional framework of the House is crucial for effective implementation.
The association, in an open letter to the parliament, stated that the new legislative term presents an opportunity to take institutional and operational steps towards achieving gender equality and translating the principle of equality into practical action within the House and across all its fields of work. The group also urged for the enhancement of women's participation in decision-making roles within the House, asserting that genuine political participation for women goes beyond numerical representation and involves enabling them to hold key responsibilities and contribute to decision-making processes.
The letter further highlighted the importance of integrating a gender equality perspective into legislation, oversight, and policy evaluation. This approach, the group argued, would impact laws, policies, programs, and public budgets for both women and men at various stages of the parliamentary process. The association recommended adopting practices and tools capable of evaluating these impacts, using sex-disaggregated data, and addressing discrimination.
The association also advocated for strengthening women's political empowerment in parliamentary diplomacy, emphasizing the principle of equality and granting women greater representation in decision-making roles.
CONTEXT: The Democratic Association of Moroccan Women is an advisory body to the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The group's call for a permanent committee on equality and anti-discrimination within the House of Representatives comes as Morocco seeks to enhance gender equality and women's political participation. This push aligns with broader international efforts to promote gender equality and women's empowerment in political and decision-making processes.
