Martin Shkreli, the former pharmaceutical executive notorious for raising the price of a crucial anti-parasitic drug, is facing contempt charges for allegedly violating his lifetime ban from the industry. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and attorneys general from seven states filed a motion on Tuesday requesting a federal judge to hold Shkreli in contempt for these alleged violations.

The FTC and the states accuse Shkreli of repeatedly breaching his ban, which was imposed in 2022, by trading stock in numerous drug companies and discussing the pharmaceutical industry during livestreams on social media. The states involved in the motion are New York, California, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, which also joined the FTC in a 2020 lawsuit against Shkreli.

The 2020 lawsuit targeted Shkreli's scheme to raise the price of Daraprim, an anti-parasitic drug, from $17.50 to $750 per pill overnight. This drastic price increase was part of an elaborate anticompetitive strategy that prevented generic competitors from entering the market.

Shkreli's fraudulent activities led to a seven-year prison sentence. Despite his ban from the pharmaceutical industry, the FTC and the seven states allege that Shkreli has been actively involved in the sector, which prompted their request for contempt charges.

CONTEXT: Martin Shkreli's case highlights the ongoing efforts to regulate the pharmaceutical industry and prevent anticompetitive practices that can drive up drug prices and limit access to essential medications. His actions and the subsequent legal actions against him underscore the importance of enforcing industry bans and holding individuals accountable for violations.
