The US Defense Department has designated Confucius Institutes, Chinese-funded cultural centers within American universities, as threats to national security. The department accuses entities linked to these institutes of engaging in propaganda and gathering information that targets intellectual property and influences students.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced the decision on Friday, stating it follows the detection of institutions linked to these centers resuming activities under different names despite previous Washington efforts to curb their spread and close some down.

In a video statement, Austin revealed that the department has identified 80 centers described as 'propaganda cells' operating within 30 American universities under various names and charters. These centers are alleged to share goals related to stealing intellectual property and influencing American students' ideas.

The US Defense Department has accused these institutions of exploiting academic and cultural activities to achieve objectives that conflict with US national security interests. Austin emphasized that changes in their names and organizational structures have not altered the nature of the tasks attributed to them by US authorities.

Austin confirmed that the department has dismantled all identified centers over the past two months as part of efforts to counter what Washington considers Chinese activities threatening US educational and research institutions.

Confucius Institutes are part of China's efforts to promote its language and culture abroad. However, US authorities view them as potential tools for political influence and propaganda within universities. Previous measures have been taken to limit these institutes' activities in American universities amid concerns over Chinese influence and the protection of research and intellectual property.

**Context**: This development underscores ongoing tensions between the US and China, highlighting concerns over foreign influence in academic institutions and the protection of intellectual property. The classification of Confucius Institutes as national security threats reflects broader US-China relations and the strategic importance of educational and research institutions in national security frameworks.
