Eye Injections Lead to Vision Loss in Tangier, Morocco

Fifteen patients at the University Hospital Mohammed VI in Tangier, Morocco, have experienced vision loss after receiving eye injections as part of routine medical treatment. The hospital confirmed that the majority of the 34 samples tested were free from bacterial infection. Two samples showed bacterial contamination. The hospital reported that one patient had shown positive improvement, while the remaining 14 patients continue to receive treatment. The chemical and microbiological tests on the injections are still pending, with the hospital awaiting results to determine the cause of the complications.

Initial reports indicated that two patients had fully recovered from the complications, while nine showed significant improvement. Four patients remained stable. The hospital initiated contact with 18 patients who had received the same treatment, revealing similar symptoms in most cases, raising concerns about the treatment's safety.

The National Agency for Blood and the Committee for the Fight Against Nosocomial Infections have intervened, taking blood samples from affected patients for further analysis. The majority of the affected patients are elderly, suffering from diabetes and related vision complications, as well as weakened immune systems.

Investigations are ongoing, with the hospital awaiting the results of the chemical and microbiological tests on the injections to determine the cause of the vision loss.
