Moderna Stock Drops 25% After Cancer Vaccine Data Leak

Moderna's stock price dropped 25% on Thursday, following a potential leak of Phase 3 clinical trial data for its experimental cancer vaccine. The data was briefly published on the medical news site Oncology Central before being removed. The leak triggered a sharp selloff, with shares falling to $181.14 at around 2 p.m. EDT. Merck, Moderna's partner in developing the vaccine, also saw a decrease in its shares by about 2%.
The data leak occurred ahead of the scheduled presentation of the results on Saturday. Despite the positive results, investors questioned whether they justified the stock’s high valuation before the leak. The downturn resulted in a loss of nearly $20 billion in market value for Moderna.
Moderna's stock had been on a significant upward trajectory since August, when it announced positive Phase 3 trial results for its personalized cancer vaccine, intismeran, designed for high-risk melanoma. The vaccine aims to lower the chances of cancer recurrence or spread to distant organs. Following the announcement, Moderna's shares surged by 290% from August 18 to Wednesday. However, Citigroup analyst Geoff Meacham had previously downgraded Moderna, stating that the boosted price was “unjustifiable.”
To justify the pre-drop share price, Moderna would need to generate approximately $13 billion in annual oncology revenue. However, Citigroup's financial model estimated that Moderna would make only a fraction of that figure, with the high share price being almost seven times higher than what realistic commercial cash flows suggest.
The cancer vaccine, intismeran autogene, is a therapeutic vaccine administered after tumor removal to train the immune system to target any remaining micro-tumors. The vaccine is fully customized for each patient, utilizing supercomputing technology.
CONTEXT: The significant drop in Moderna's stock price highlights the volatility and investor sensitivity surrounding biotech companies, particularly those involved in high-stakes cancer research. The incident underscores the importance of data security and the potential market impact of premature data releases. It also raises questions about the sustainability of rapid stock price increases based on early clinical trial results.
