European stocks ended higher on Monday, with the STOXX 600 index closing at 635.65 points, marking two consecutive days of gains. This rise was driven by a significant increase in banking stocks, which offset the impact of rising oil prices. The banking sector on the STOXX 600 rose by 1.5%.

The Spanish IBEX index, heavily influenced by the banking sector, saw the highest gain in the region, rising by 1.33%. Analysts at Julius Baer noted that European and Asian stocks in sectors like banking could offer stronger value and returns compared to their U.S. counterparts.

Investors are expected to focus on corporate earnings this week, with results from companies like ASML, a manufacturer of semiconductor equipment, and investment firm EQT, scheduled to be released later in the week. These results are anticipated to help alleviate some of the pessimism that followed renewed tensions in the Middle East.

Oil prices approached their highest levels in two weeks, with attacks on Saudi Arabia affecting supply expectations. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump praised new Russian diesel exports and a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine that includes energy-related targets. Bond yields in the eurozone declined, boosting sentiment towards riskier assets, although they remained close to multi-year highs, reflecting concerns about prolonged high interest rates.

Individual stocks saw notable movements, with Nordics, a wind turbine manufacturer, rising by 3.9% after reporting a 30% increase in order intake for the third quarter. However, LVMH, a luxury goods company, reported lower-than-expected organic sales growth, impacted by weak demand for its fashion and leather goods, though its shares closed 1.18% higher before the report's release. The luxury goods sector index rose by 0.95%.

Data from the London Stock Exchange Group indicated that traders currently expect the European Central Bank to keep interest rates unchanged at its October meeting, with a quarter-point increase anticipated in December.

CONTEXT: This matters as it reflects the resilience of European markets amidst global economic uncertainties, with banking stocks leading the gains despite rising oil prices and geopolitical tensions. The focus on corporate earnings and the mixed performance of individual stocks highlight the complex dynamics at play in the current market environment.
