Athens Contemporary Art Museum Wins European Award for Social Impact

The National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMΣT) has been honored with the European Museum Academy Art Museum Award for its significant social impact. The announcement was made during a ceremony in Alicante, Spain, on September 26, following a competitive selection process.
The award, given annually to a museum or gallery that best fulfills its role as a social institution, was bestowed upon EMΣT after a panel of judges visited various applicants across Europe. The museum was chosen from a shortlist that included the Rijksmuseum, FENIX Museum of Migration, Hastings Contemporary, Museum Gugging, and the National Gallery of Slovenia.
Samuel Gallacher, chair of the award jury, highlighted that EMΣT's commitment to quality, originality, and positive impact set it apart in a highly competitive field. The museum, which began operations in 2000, has a history of moving between different locations, including the Athens Concert Hall and various public spaces, before settling into its permanent location in a former brewery in 2015.
EMΣT's exhibitions have featured notable solo shows on artists such as Jannis Kounellis, Yang Fudong, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Tala Madani, and Sammy Baloji. Additionally, the museum has hosted an exhibition cycle exploring the hypothetical scenario of a world ruled by women. The museum's permanent collections intertwine sociopolitical struggles in Greece with those from South Africa, the Middle East, and other regions.
