San Antonio's Centro de Artes is commemorating a decade of operation with a new exhibition, Mercado/Material, which opened on October 16 and will run through March 7, 2027. The show, curated by Mia Lopez, features 16 artists who use vibrant imagery and popular culture to delve into themes of Latinx cultural identity and consumerism.

The exhibition showcases a variety of art forms, including layered screen prints, monumental piñata sculptures, vibrant paintings, immersive installations, and textile and ceramic sculptures. These works draw inspiration from markets in San Antonio, vendors in Chicago, storefronts in Mexico, and New York bodegas, engaging viewers with iconic forms of Latinx visual culture.

The artworks in Mercado/Material explore complex ideas around belonging, labor, and commerce, building on the Pop art tradition of figures like Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg. The exhibition is housed in the historic Market Square in downtown San Antonio, a site with a rich cultural history that once served as a produce annex.
