Eight restored films by Armenian filmmaker Artavazd Pelechian were presented at the New York Film Festival (NYFF) in 2026. The showcase, known as the Pelechian Project, featured works that have undergone 4K restoration. The filmmaker, active during the Soviet era, has a limited but influential body of work, consisting of 13 films, mostly shorts, with two features that are under an hour long. His most recent release, Nature, came out in 2019.

Pelechian's approach to filmmaking, termed 'distance montage,' differs from traditional montage techniques. He studied under influential Soviet directors like Sergei Eisenstein, Vsevolod Pudovkin, and Dziga Vertov at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow. However, Pelechian's method focuses on the overall film's meaning rather than the significance of individual shots. He described his technique as a means to understand the present rather than transitioning from one point to another.

Pelechian's films are characterized by intricate shot assemblages unified by distinct themes. His work has gained international recognition over the decades, leading to the restoration of many of his films. The NYFF showcase marks a significant milestone in the appreciation and preservation of Pelechian's unique cinematic style.
