Linux Hack Unlocks Extra Performance for Two Nvidia RTX 40 GPUs

A hack has emerged that enables two specific Nvidia RTX 40 graphics cards to perform certain calculations at double the speed, but only when using the Linux operating system.

The hack, which has gained significant attention online, targets the RTX 4070 and RTX 4080 GPUs. It does not require altering the card's BIOS, a process that can be risky and void warranties. The hack is not applicable to other RTX 40 series cards, such as the RTX 4090.

This hack focuses on a specific type of calculation known as FP32, which is commonly used in scientific computing and machine learning tasks. It does not enhance other types of performance, such as gaming or graphics rendering.

The hack was first shared on a popular online forum, where users discussed its potential and limitations. It has since been verified by multiple users, confirming its effectiveness for the targeted calculations on the specified GPUs.

The hack involves modifying the GPU's driver software, a process that requires technical knowledge and is not recommended for users unfamiliar with Linux systems or GPU drivers.

Nvidia has not officially responded to the hack, and it is unclear whether the company will address the issue in future driver updates. Some users speculate that Nvidia might release an official update to close the loophole, while others believe the company could incorporate the performance boost into future driver releases.

This development highlights the ongoing interest in optimizing GPU performance for specific tasks, particularly in fields that rely heavily on computational power. It also underscores the active community of users who seek to push the boundaries of hardware capabilities through software modifications.
