Thousands of Sheep March Through Madrid for Annual Festival

Over 1,400 sheep and goats marched through the streets of Madrid on Sunday, marking the 33rd annual Transhumance Festival. The event, a traditional celebration of the seasonal movement of livestock, followed an altered route this year to avoid a housing protest.
The festival began at the Plaza de España and concluded at the Plaza Mayor. The procession was a spectacle for spectators, who gathered along the route to witness the unique event. The festival is a celebration of the ancient practice of transhumance, where livestock are moved from one grazing ground to another in response to seasonal changes.
This year's festival was particularly notable for its route change. Organizers adjusted the path to steer clear of a housing protest, ensuring the smooth flow of the event and the safety of both the animals and participants.
The Transhumance Festival is a significant cultural event in Madrid, drawing crowds from across the region. It highlights the deep-rooted traditions of pastoralism and the importance of livestock in the region's history and economy. The festival also serves as a reminder of the enduring connection between humans and nature, showcasing the harmonious coexistence of urban life and traditional practices.
Despite the route change, the festival maintained its festive atmosphere, with participants and spectators alike enjoying the unique experience. The event concluded with a traditional gathering at the Plaza Mayor, where the livestock were rested and celebrated.
