Brazilian leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva secured a historic fourth term in the presidential election on Sunday, but right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, has refused to concede defeat.

Bolsonaro, who is a senator, questioned a late decision by a Supreme Court justice appointed by Lula to extend voting by two hours due to alleged voter transport irregularities. He announced his intention to challenge the results. However, analysts consider it unlikely that his efforts will succeed, given the significant margin of Lula's victory—over 4 million votes.

Despite his refusal to concede, Bolsonaro's campaign had previously requested a voting extension due to heavy rains in the conservative-leaning south of the country. Observers note that Bolsonaro's stance could provoke protests in a nation where trust in the electoral system and judicial independence has been weakened in recent years. Jair Bolsonaro's refusal to accept his 2022 election loss led to a deep democratic crisis, with his supporters storming government buildings. He was later sentenced to 27 years for plotting a coup.

Lula's victory was unexpected, defying polls and the global trend of right-wing election wins in Latin America. This outcome is likely to disappoint the administration of US President Donald Trump, whose State Department had campaigned for the Bolsonaros' return to power. Financial markets also reacted negatively to Lula's win, with a Tokyo-listed exchange-traded fund tracking Brazil's Bovespa index falling nearly 15% in Asia trade.

Lula, who trailed Bolsonaro in the first round, managed to convince voters to support him in the runoff. Speaking late on Sunday at a hotel in São Paulo, he addressed his supporters.
