Jordan Conducts Airstrikes in Southern Syria

Jordanian air force launched airstrikes on Monday against alleged terrorist sites in southern Syria, in retaliation for a deadly attack on a church in Karak, Jordan, on Friday. The attack in Karak resulted in nine fatalities and 25 injuries.

The Jordanian military confirmed the airstrikes, stating that the operation targeted hideouts of terrorist organizations in southern Syria. The strikes were described as a response to the victims of the church attack.

No official comment from the Syrian authorities regarding the airstrikes had been made by Monday evening. It remains unclear whether the military operation was coordinated with the Syrian government in Damascus.

The airstrikes come after a period of relative calm in the region, with the last significant military action in southern Syria occurring in July 2018, when the Syrian army, backed by Russian forces, launched an offensive against rebel groups.

In recent years, southern Syria has seen various militant groups, including those affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, operating in the region. These groups have been targeted by both Syrian and international forces, including the U.S. and its allies, as part of broader counter-terrorism efforts.

Jordan, which shares a border with Syria, has been actively involved in the fight against terrorism, conducting several airstrikes and ground operations against militant groups in the past. The country has also been a key player in the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State, providing intelligence and logistical support.

The airstrikes highlight the ongoing security challenges in the region, as well as the complex dynamics between Jordan, Syria, and various militant groups. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for further military action or diplomatic efforts to address the underlying issues.
